“Now, please greet the monk. You haven’t forgotten how to bow, have you?” she said, leaning in intimately, peering at my face, and urging me on.
The idiot swayed, placed both hands on the ground, and bowed with a slump, as if a spring had broken.
“Yes,” I said, and feeling a lump in my throat, I too lowered my head.
Just as she was about to fall sideways, her muscles seemingly giving out as she looked down, the woman gently supported her and helped her up.
“Oh, well done.”
She continued with a look that seemed to say, “Splendid.”
“Reverend, I believe you can do anything, but this person’s illness cannot be cured by a doctor’s hand or by that water. Since both her legs cannot stand, whatever I teach her is useless. And look, even a single bow is as difficult as you see.
She learns if taught, but it must be very difficult and painstaking. Thinking it would only cause her physical pain, I let her do nothing, and gradually she forgot how to move her hands and how to speak. Still, she still knows two or three songs. Now, please sing one for our guest.”
The idiot looked at the woman, then stared at my face, and shook her head as if shy of strangers.
