Villon's Wife

A husband crumbling under alcohol, debt, lies, and escape. And next to him, a wife struggling to survive with poverty, shame, and even a sick child. One late night, the husband runs away with money from a bar, and the wife finds herself caught up in an unexpected incident. An enraged couple of the bar owners come to their house, and for the first time, the wife learns about her husband's life outside. It should be a tragic story, yet somehow it makes one laugh. In moments where one should be crying, life is strangely comical. This work, set against the backdrop of post-war chaos in Japan, depicts through the eyes of a wife who watches her poet husband fall into ruin, the ugliness of humanity, the sorrows of daily life, and an inexplicable vitality.
