Yes. A VN work has three states: - Draft: still being written; visible only to the author. - Published: other users can play it. - Archived: taken down from public view and kept in storage. While writing, use [Save] as often as you like, and when the work is finished switch the status to "Published". You can also move it back to draft or archived after publishing.
They are the mechanisms that remember the player's actions and reflect them in the story. - Variables: store a value and use it as a branch condition. For example start with hp = 100, subtract 30 on damage, then set a choice condition such as "if hp is 0 or below, go to the game-over scene". - Affinity: raises or lowers a specific character's affinity. Useful for route branching and ending conditions. - Stats: change ability values such as courage, wisdom, or charm. - Items: add or remove keys and tools in the inventory. Item possession can lock or unlock a choice. - Clues: let the player collect clues, for mystery and detective stories. The Ending block displays an ending and ends the game, and you can create multiple endings conditioned on the values above.
Yes, via the Minigame block. Supported types include card matching, puzzle, sequence, word, lock, timing, and jigsaw. Minigames branch on their outcome: you can route success to one scene and failure to another. In author preview only a result notice is shown instead of the actual jump, so check the branching in real playback. A QTE block (press a specific key within a time limit) is also available.
Neither is required. - Coding: not needed. It is a no-code editor where you pick blocks and stack them in order, so anyone can build a VN without programming knowledge. - Installation: not needed. A web browser is all it takes to start creating. Traditional tools like Ren'Py and TyranoBuilder require installation or programming knowledge; with WEINOVEL you start right in the browser and AI even creates the illustrations for you.
Downloading and exporting VN game files is not available on weinovel.com at this time. Playing in the browser is the supported method. After saving, switch the work status to "Published" and other users can play it directly on the web. The Import function remains available.
VN creation is limited to approved authors. If you try to create one while logged out you are sent to the sign-in screen, and accounts without author approval cannot enter the creation page even when signed in. To get approval, please go through the author application process. Playing VNs that other users have published, on the other hand, is not restricted.
There are two sound blocks: - BGM block: plays or stops background music. Once started it keeps playing until another BGM block changes or stops it, so place it where the mood of the scene shifts. - SE (sound effect) block: plays a short sound once, such as a knock or footsteps. Place it just before the line or effect it belongs to. BGM supports fade-in and fade-out times in seconds, so music can change smoothly along with a scene transition.
Characters are managed as reusable assets. 1. Add the character by name first - this creates a character card. 2. Set a base image on the card. You can generate it with AI, upload your own, or pick one from your gallery. 3. Expand the expression (angle) images, and you can then pick the expression you want via the Show Character block in any scene. Besides expression, the Show Character block lets you set screen position (left, center, right), size, vertical alignment, and whether other characters exit. Backgrounds are set with the Change Background block. Props (a truck, a door, a sword, etc.) can also be registered in the library like characters and reused across scenes - props are generated with no people and a transparent background.
These are the blocks you can stack inside a scene: [Basics] - Dialogue: adds a character's line - Narration: adds situation description or monologue - Choice / Timed choice: creates branches [Screen composition] - Change background, background zoom, show/hide character, show/hide prop, CG (fullscreen event illustration) [Direction] - Screen effects (heartbeat, flash, etc.), scene transitions, character animation, weather effects (rain, snow, wind) [Sound] - BGM play/stop, sound effect (knock, footsteps - played once) [Game systems] - Set variable, change affinity, change stats (courage, wisdom, charm, etc.), add/remove item, collect clue, QTE, minigame, ending Each block shows a short description of what it does when you add it.
Use the Choice block. 1. Add a Choice block where the branch should happen. 2. Enter the text for each option (e.g. "Open the door" / "Turn back"). 3. Set a "Next Scene" for each option, and the player jumps to that scene based on what they picked. There are advanced uses too: - Auto-advance: leave exactly one choice, clear its text, and set only the next scene - playback moves there automatically with no button. Handy for stitching scenes together smoothly. - Timed choice: a choice that branches automatically when the time limit expires. - Conditional branching: use variables, affinity, stats, or item possession to lock a choice or route the player to a different scene.
A scene is one unit of story in your VN. Create one with [Add Scene] in the scene list and set two things: - Scene key: the unique identifier for the scene (e.g. scene_01). Choices link to scenes by this key when you pick a "Next Scene", so use a consistent, readable naming rule. - Scene title: a label for your own reference as the author. The scene the game opens with must be designated the "Start Scene" - otherwise playback has no defined starting point. You can delete scenes later, but be careful: if another choice points to that scene, the link breaks.
Creating a VN on WEINOVEL happens entirely in your web browser with no installation, in six main steps. Step 1. Create a new work - Enter the title, genre, and cover image from [Create VN]. Step 2. Create scenes - Click [Add Scene] in the scene list, then set a scene key (e.g. scene_01) and a scene title. Be sure to designate the scene the game opens with as the "Start Scene". Step 3. Write the script - Stack blocks in order inside each scene. The basics are Dialogue blocks (what a character says) and Narration blocks (situation descriptions, monologue); use Show/Hide Character and Change Background blocks to compose the screen. Step 4. Branch with choices - Add a Choice block and set a "Next Scene" for each option so the story branches based on the player's choice. Step 5. Add direction - Enrich the work with BGM, sound effects, CG (event illustrations), screen effects, transitions, and weather effects. Step 6. Preview, save, publish - Check it in preview, save, then change the work status to "Published" so other users can play it. VN creation is available to approved authors only.
