In visual novels, 'timing' is a powerful directing tool that goes beyond the speed at which text appears, controlling the reader's emotions. Even the same lines can evoke excitement or fear depending on how they are presented.
Today, I will introduce three timing directing techniques that can maximize the tension in your work using the WEINOVEL editor.
1. Adjusting text output speed according to emotions If all lines flow at the same speed, readers can easily feel bored. Try setting different speeds based on the character's state.
- **Urgent situations:** Output text at a speed 1.5 times faster than usual to convey the urgency of the situation.
- **Hesitation or sadness:** Output very slowly or leave slight spaces between words to depict the character's complex emotions.
2. Utilizing silence through 'Pause' Sometimes, what resonates more than words is 'silence.' Try using the `[pause]` function in the middle of dialogue.
- **Just before a twist:** A static moment of 0.5 to 1 second right before stating an important fact dramatically increases the reader's focus.
- **Shocking reaction:** When shocked by what someone else says, instead of responding immediately, you can visualize the character's confusion by letting silence linger on the screen.
3. Synchronizing background music (BGM) with direction Calculate the timing so that important text appears in sync with the climax of the music. Transitioning the screen or outputting intense lines during the 'drop' section of the background music significantly enhances the quality of the direction in terms of immersion.
WEINOVEL supports various editor functions to help creators capture the reader's heart with even the slightest differences in direction. Try applying the timing techniques introduced today to your work!
